Start the engine, and let it idle until the oil-temperature gauge begins registering. This thins the oil so it drains more completely. Unscrew the engine oil-filler cap, letting air in to help oil drainage.
Slide under the engine, and find the oil-drain bolt. It will be about the lowest point under the engine. You can tell the difference because the metal around the oil-drain bolt will be hot. Loosen the drain bolt with a regular crescent wrench. The bolt turns counterclockwise. Slide a drain pan under the drain bolt, then unscrew the bolt all the way.
Find the oil filter underneath the engine. Adjust the oil-filter wrench to grip when turned counterclockwise, if it has such an orientation. Put the oil-filter wrench on the oil filter. Turn the wrench, preferably with a socket wrench, although a crescent wrench works, too. You insert the male end of a socket wrench into the hole in the center of the oil-filter wrench.
Unscrew the filter manually. Let the oil drain into the oil pan, for an hour if you have the time. This is much longer than repair shops do it, which is one improvement you can make. Screw the drain bolt back in, using a new washer, as recommended by Edmunds. The washer flexes to form a good seal, but this means it wears fast, too. Remove the rubber O-ring that seals the filter to the engine.Likewise, changing the transmission filter at this time is also added insurance.

Because it may take some time to drain the fluid from the converter, you may wish to start draining at this time, then proceed with the pan and filter removal.
To do this, remove the converter cover and slowly turn the converter by hand until you can access the plug. Loosen all of the pan attaching bolts to within a few turns of complete removal, then carefully break the gasket seal allowing most of the fluid to drain over the edge of the pan.

When fluid has drained to the level of the pan flange, remove the pan bolts and carefully lower the pan doing your best to drain the rest of the fluid into the drain pan.
Clean the transmission oil pan thoroughly using a safe solvent, then allow it to air dry. DO NOT use a cloth to dry the pan which might leave behind bits of lint. Discard the old pan gasket.
If necessary, remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF filter mounting bolts, then remove the filter by pulling it down and off of the valve body. Make sure any gaskets or seals are removed with the old filter. The transmission usually has one round seal and a rectangular gasket. Install the new oil filter screen making sure all gaskets or seals are in place, then secure using the retaining screws, if applicable. Place a new gasket on the fluid pan, then install the pan to the transmission.
Tighten the attaching bolts to inch lbs. Add 3-quarts quarts if the torque convener was drained of fluid to the transmission through the filler tube. Start the engine and move the gear selector through all gears in the shift pattern.
Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Check the transmission fluid level. Add fluid, as necessary, to obtain the correct level.
If you drained the converter you will likely have to repeat steps 11 and 12 a few times. The system consists of the the transmission, torque convertor, cooler, and lines. My luck I'd drain it first without doing that and then find out it'll take me forever to manage to get a stuck fill plug out. First thing I'll do then is go ahead and PB Blast that fill plug and make sure I can turn the plug out before proceeding.
