Ford ranger gearbox oil change

The Ford Ranger was called the best-selling compact pickup in by Consumer Reports. You can change a Ranger's oil and oil filter yourself, with adequate drainage time and no mileage-robbing overflows. Start the engine, and let it idle until the oil-temperature gauge begins registering. This thins the oil so it drains more completely. Unscrew the engine oil-filler cap, letting air in to help oil drainage.

Slide under the engine, and find the oil-drain bolt. It will be about the lowest point under the engine. You can tell the difference because the metal around the oil-drain bolt will be hot. Loosen the drain bolt with a regular crescent wrench. The bolt turns counterclockwise. Slide a drain pan under the drain bolt, then unscrew the bolt all the way.

Find the oil filter underneath the engine. Adjust the oil-filter wrench to grip when turned counterclockwise, if it has such an orientation. Put the oil-filter wrench on the oil filter. Turn the wrench, preferably with a socket wrench, although a crescent wrench works, too. You insert the male end of a socket wrench into the hole in the center of the oil-filter wrench.

Unscrew the filter manually. Let the oil drain into the oil pan, for an hour if you have the time. This is much longer than repair shops do it, which is one improvement you can make. Screw the drain bolt back in, using a new washer, as recommended by Edmunds. The washer flexes to form a good seal, but this means it wears fast, too. Remove the rubber O-ring that seals the filter to the engine.Likewise, changing the transmission filter at this time is also added insurance.

Because it may take some time to drain the fluid from the converter, you may wish to start draining at this time, then proceed with the pan and filter removal.

To do this, remove the converter cover and slowly turn the converter by hand until you can access the plug. Loosen all of the pan attaching bolts to within a few turns of complete removal, then carefully break the gasket seal allowing most of the fluid to drain over the edge of the pan.

DO NOT allow the pan flange to become bent or otherwise damaged.

When fluid has drained to the level of the pan flange, remove the pan bolts and carefully lower the pan doing your best to drain the rest of the fluid into the drain pan.

Clean the transmission oil pan thoroughly using a safe solvent, then allow it to air dry. DO NOT use a cloth to dry the pan which might leave behind bits of lint. Discard the old pan gasket.

If necessary, remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF filter mounting bolts, then remove the filter by pulling it down and off of the valve body. Make sure any gaskets or seals are removed with the old filter. The transmission usually has one round seal and a rectangular gasket. Install the new oil filter screen making sure all gaskets or seals are in place, then secure using the retaining screws, if applicable. Place a new gasket on the fluid pan, then install the pan to the transmission.

Tighten the attaching bolts to inch lbs. Add 3-quarts quarts if the torque convener was drained of fluid to the transmission through the filler tube. Start the engine and move the gear selector through all gears in the shift pattern.

Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Check the transmission fluid level. Add fluid, as necessary, to obtain the correct level.

If you drained the converter you will likely have to repeat steps 11 and 12 a few times. The system consists of the the transmission, torque convertor, cooler, and lines. Therefore, the amount of fluid required will depending on how much has drained from the system. Changing The Fluid: 1. Raise the car and support it securely on jackstands. Place a large drain pan under the transmission.

I've been reading with interest all the auto transmission threads here as I know I'll be doing this in the future. Looking at my scheduled maintenance guide it reads: 60, miles Change transmission fluid and filter on all vehicles equiped with the TorqShift transmission.

Consult your dealer for particular requirements. Questions: 1. What is TorqShift? Would it be better to change the fluid and filter much earlier than this?

Would earlier changes, say at 20, mile intervals eliminate the need for a complete transmission flush? I've never changed auto transmission fluid myself so I want to be prepared and educated when the time comes. Educate me folks! TruxEdo tonneua cover, rubber bed mat, Ranger all weather floor mats. Well worth it for them to do it rather laying on my back doing it myself.

Cars have a gearbox connecting the two axles. This gearbox is responsible for the conversion of engine power and its transmission to the wheels, allowing them to turn at varying speeds. This part of the car is called the differential, and lubrication is needed for it to function properly. Differential oil should be changed every 30, to 50, miles.

The differential is responsible for transferring the power from the engine to the transmission and the wheels, and for controlling how much power goes to each wheel. Like many aspects of your vehicle, the differential requires oil to act as lubrication. Differential oil allows the differential to move smoothly and consistently, which allows the vehicle to continue sending power to the wheels.

If the differential oil is old, it may be contaminated with debris and metal shavings.

This contamination will come into constant contact with the differential, which can cause severe long term damage to the differential. Get an upfront price.

How Do I Change Transmission Fluid in a Ford Ranger?

Keep in mind: Some vehicles have a front differential and others have a rear differential. Some vehicles use a synthetic gear oil. How it's done: Check fluid level. Inspect the rear housing for leaks. Remove the cover if the differential does not have a drain plug.Changing the transmission fluid on a Ford Ranger should be done when the transmission fluid has changed color from red to a brownish color, indicating clutch material in the fluid, or at regular intervals of 30, miles.

To change the transmission fluid in a Ranger, you will need one case of transmission fluid and a transmission service kit. The service kit includes a pan gasket and filter. Raise and support the vehicle on the jack stands, making sure it is high enough to work underneath easily.

Place the catch pan underneath the transmission. Take the bolts out of the bottom of the transmission pan but leave two bolts in the front engine side partway in to keep the pan from falling. Remove the last two bolts while holding the pan and tip it slowly in the rear to pour out the oil. Once the oil is out, clean the pan and the magnet inside the pan with carburetor cleaner and a soft rag. Take the bolts out of the transmission filter and remove the filter and the rubber o-ring.

Replace it with a new o-ring and tighten the bolts. Make absolutely sure that there is no lint or anything else left in the pan. The smallest piece of material can block a port in the valve body and cause it to malfunction. Install the transmission gasket on the pan.

If an adhesive is desired then use weatherstrip adhesive. Use a small amount, just enough to hold it in place. Do not use RTV silicone since that will squeeze into the oil pan and cause a malfunction. Lift the pan into place and install the bolts. Let the vehicle down. Using a funnel, fill the transmission with 7 quarts of transmission fluid to start. Start the truck and let it run for 2 minutes and then, holding the brake, shift it through reverse and drive, hesitating for 30 seconds in each position.

Put the transmission back into neutral. With the engine running and the transmission in neutral, check the fluid and fill as needed. Best of all it's totally free! SalRanger2Jun 30, Good tip to make sure I can get the fill plug out okay beforehand! I probably might not have done that if you hadn't mentioned it. My luck I'd drain it first without doing that and then find out it'll take me forever to manage to get a stuck fill plug out. First thing I'll do then is go ahead and PB Blast that fill plug and make sure I can turn the plug out before proceeding.

When refilling, the fill hole seems kinda up there where it'll be rather difficult to tip the quart bottles of ATF and have the fluid run down into the hole.

I don't have the special type fluid pump and if I'm too cheap to go buy one what's a good way otherwise? SalRanger2Jul 1, I have always ran synthetic gear oil in mine.Today even a normal driver can stop and start as many as 18, times a year.
